Your guide to accessing NY 529 funds.

When it’s time to withdraw from your NY 529 Direct Plan account, choose the method that works best—online, by mail, or by phone—and follow a few simple steps.

If you don't have an account, get started now.

Online

  1. Log on to your account.
  2. From My Accounts, choose the appropriate account to act on.
  3. On the "Overview" page, under Investments, select Make a Withdrawal.
  4. Select one of the following:
    • Yes. This is a qualified withdrawal for higher education expenses; or
    • Yes. This is a withdrawal to pay for fees, books, supplies and/or equipment required for participation in an apprenticeship program registered and certified with the Secretary of Labor; or
    • No. This is a nonqualified withdrawal that will not be used for education expenses.
    • Yes. This is a withdrawal to pay expenses for tuition in connection with enrollment or attendance at an elementary or secondary public, private, or religious school; or
    • Yes. This is a withdrawal to pay for principal or interest on a qualified education loan of the beneficiary or a sibling of the beneficiary. If sending funds directly to a school, enter the beneficiary's student ID in the Memo section.
  5. If you're withdrawing funds to pay elementary or secondary school tuition, please note that for NY State tax purposes, this will require the recapture of any NY State tax benefits that have accrued on contributions.
  6. Submit your request.

Note: Remember to enter the beneficiary's student ID number in the Memo section if your withdrawal is going directly to the college or other post-secondary school. Please note, however, that withdrawals for K-12 tuition cannot be sent directly to the beneficiary or the educational institution. We will only send withdrawals for K-12 tuition to the account owner.

  1. Download and print the Withdrawal Request Form.
  2. Complete and sign the form.
  3. Include the beneficiary’s student ID if sending funds directly to a school.
  4. Mail to:

By Phone

  1. Call 877-NYSAVES (877-697-2837).
  2. Provide your account, beneficiary, school information, and student ID if sending funds directly to a school.

Important:

  • Allow 10 business days for funds to arrive.
  • Processing may take longer during peak times or if updating bank information.
  • A 15-day verification period applies when adding or changing bank details.
